It seems like recently everyone is styling sheer for both going out and everyday looks. Trending sites like Edikted, Princess Polly, and Zara are selling out of different sheer pieces fast. Honestly, to me, this trend feels different from what we have been seeing in the media the past few years, and I suspect it will not be short-lived. What many may not realize is that there is a deeper, cultural message behind this fashion movement. Among many designers curating sheer at the moment, Miuccia Prada, the head designer of Miu Miu, strongly influenced the widespread trend. The 2023 Fall/Winter collection showcased an abundance of sheer fabrics and, in a sense, made the models vulnerable to the audience. The idea of sheer clothing was designed by Miuccia with intention. She wanted to make a statement with the use of fashion to challenge what is generally considered the norm. Essentially, sheer clothing is not doing what clothing was made to do: cover bodies. Instead, they are communicating a message of postmodernity, where individuals are unapologetically expressing and celebrating themselves.
