Have you wondered what the rise of artificial intelligence means for the fashion industry? You may not know yet, but behind the scenes of creative industries, AI is being increasingly used in design, marketing, ideas, etc. Vogue has already come out with an AI-generated model in a recent issue and received a whole lot of backlash in the media. It feels inauthentic to see a highly reputable fashion and culture magazine using AI. Your favorite fast-fashion brands are already heavily reliant on AI to design the very same clothes you are purchasing. The fast-fashion industry survives on trends, so they have to act fast when new pieces become sensationalized. Using AI technology allows brands like Zara and Shein to develop trendy design ideas and production in a much faster process. Fast fashion’s motive is not to create intentional, authentic pieces, but rather to design what is most likely to sell to the average consumer in today’s culture. Brands may continue to rely on AI to grow sales, but human creativity remains unmatched in its ability to express meaning in the world. Honestly, I believe the rise of AI might actually make us value ideas created by humans more than ever before.
